What’s Driving the Shift in Healthier Snacking?

12th August 2026

Consumers want healthier choices without sacrificing indulgence

Consumers are becoming more conscious of what goes into their food. However, this does not mean they are ignoring indulgence. Instead, they are finding new ways to combine enjoyment with healthier ingredients.

FMCG Gurus’ research shows that consumers are experimenting with wholefood ingredients, functional nutrition and homemade recipes. At the same time, taste and enjoyment remain essential. This is creating new opportunities for healthier snacking, where nutrition supports the experience rather than replacing it.

Ingredient scrutiny is influencing indulgence

Concerns around processing are encouraging consumers to pay closer attention to ingredients. FMCG Gurus’ research shows that 48% of global consumers consider ultra-processed food and drink unhealthy or very unhealthy. Meanwhile, 66% of consumers who view ultra-processed food negatively associate it with obesity.

As a result, recognizable ingredients can provide reassurance. Consumers are also preparing more snacks and desserts at home. This gives them greater control over what goes into their food.

For brands, transparency is becoming increasingly important. Products need to provide convenience without making consumers question ingredient quality.

Protein and fiber are reshaping healthier snacking

Functional ingredients have also moved beyond traditional sports nutrition. Protein and fiber now feature across mainstream snacks, bakery products and desserts.

This reflects wider changes in snacking behavior. 26% of global consumers say they are snacking more frequently than twelve months earlier. Among those consumers, 44% are seeking snacks that can improve their diet.

This creates opportunities to rethink familiar indulgent foods. Consumers are experimenting with ingredients such as cottage cheese, chickpeas and sweet potatoes. These ingredients can add nutritional value while creating new textures and eating experiences.

Brands should therefore show consumers how familiar ingredients can be used in creative ways. Recipe inspiration can help make healthier choices feel enjoyable rather than restrictive.

Global flavors are inspiring experimentation

Healthier snacking is not only about nutrition. Consumers also want discovery, creativity and new experiences.

FMCG Gurus’ research finds that 61% of global consumers like food and drink products with new and unusual or exotic flavors. Furthermore, 71% of consumers who enjoy these flavors say they like trying new flavors from around the world.

Global food cultures can therefore provide inspiration for healthier choices. Simple ingredients, traditional preparation methods and distinctive flavors can strengthen perceptions of authenticity.

This also gives consumers opportunities to experiment at home. Brands can support this behavior through recipes, serving suggestions and ingredient combinations inspired by different cuisines.

Enjoyment must remain at the heart of snacking

Despite growing interest in nutrition, brands should avoid making health the only reason to choose an indulgent product.

Snacking remains closely linked to reward, comfort and enjoyment. Consumers still want memorable flavors and satisfying textures. Healthier ingredients should enhance these experiences rather than make products feel restrictive.

This means brands need to lead with sensory appeal. Taste, texture and enjoyment can capture attention, while recognizable ingredients and nutritional benefits provide additional reassurance.

Look beyond individual viral food trends

Social media will continue to create viral recipes and unusual ingredient combinations. However, individual trends can disappear quickly.

The bigger opportunity lies in the behavior behind them. Consumers want to experiment, personalize recipes and share their creations. They are also looking for ways to make indulgence fit with their wider health priorities.

Brands should therefore avoid chasing every viral recipe. Instead, they can build flexible ingredient platforms and provide inspiration that encourages consumers to create something themselves.

The future of healthier snacking is not about removing enjoyment. It is about giving consumers more ways to enjoy food while feeling confident about the ingredients they choose.
