Why Nostalgia Is Shaping Food and Drink Innovation

9th October 2026

Consumers are looking to the past for familiarity, comfort, and simplicity

Nostalgia in food and drink is taking on a new role as consumers look for familiarity in a world that can feel fast, uncertain, and complex. However, this is not simply about recreating products from the past. Consumers are drawn to the feelings they associate with earlier decades, including comfort, trust, simplicity, and connection.

FMCG Gurus’ research shows that 53% of global consumers agree that the world is changing too quickly. Meanwhile, 60% are concerned about rising living costs. These pressures can make the past feel more appealing, even among younger consumers who did not experience the periods they idealize themselves.

Nostalgia

Nostalgia offers comfort in uncertain times

Modern life can feel demanding. Consumers face financial pressure alongside concerns around health, food quality, and the pace of everyday life. As a result, familiar products and experiences can provide reassurance.

This helps explain why nostalgia in food and drink extends beyond retro packaging. FMCG Gurus’ research shows that 51% of global consumers experience feelings of fatigue and tiredness, while 53% experience feelings of stress. At the same time, some consumers question whether modern food has changed for the better.

For brands, the opportunity is to understand what consumers want to recover from the past. This could be simplicity, familiarity, trust, or a greater sense of control.

Familiar flavors create comfort and escapism

Food and drink can provide a strong connection with memories. Childhood products, family recipes, and familiar flavors can remind consumers of people, places, and occasions.

This emotional connection has clear appeal. FMCG Gurus’ research shows that traditional and nostalgic flavors appeal to 57% of consumers for food and 59% for soft drinks.

However, the appeal moves beyond familiarity. Among consumers attracted to nostalgic flavors, 70% say food flavors offer moments of comfort and escapism, rising to 71% for soft drinks.

Therefore, nostalgia in food and drink can give brands an emotional route to engagement. It can also encourage consumers to rediscover products, flavors, and occasions they already recognize.

Simpler food strengthens nostalgic appeal

Nostalgia can also reflect changing attitudes toward ingredients and processing. Some consumers associate the past with food that felt simpler, more natural, and less processed.

This creates an opportunity to connect nostalgia in food and drink with tangible product qualities. Traditional ingredients, familiar recipes, clear provenance, and recognizable preparation methods can help make this positioning feel credible.

Importantly, retro branding alone may not be enough. If brands communicate simplicity, the product should support that message. FMCG Gurus’ research highlights how consumers who associate nostalgic flavors with health often link this perception to fewer artificial ingredients, more natural ingredients, and the absence of artificial coloring.

Brands need to make nostalgia relevant today

Looking backwards does not mean products should stay stuck in the past. Consumers may value tradition while still expecting modern standards of taste, quality, convenience, and experience.

This creates space for “new-stalgia.” Rather than recreating an old product exactly, brands can preserve recognizable elements while updating the format, ingredients, or occasion. The goal is to give consumers something familiar while providing a reason to rediscover it.
